Dr. Akers is a board-certified Infectious Disease physician who arrived at the San Antonio VA after retiring from the United States Army Medical Corps in July 2024. He brings significant experience in the administration of human research programs, as well as the daily operations of a hospital-based clinical research unit. His prior research interests and experience include combat wound infections, multidrug-resistant bacterial infections and their treatment, bacterial biofilms, orthopedic device-related infections, and clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials in severe burn and trauma patients. As the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Research, he oversees the Human Research Program at the San Antonio VA.
